The Angelica Library, founded in 1604<\/strong> by Augustinian bishop Angelo Rocca<\/strong>, is the first European library open to the public.<\/p>\n The ancient collection is estimated at about 120,000 volumes<\/strong> relating mainly to Augustinian thought and the history of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation. Since 1940<\/strong> it has been home to theArcadia Literary Academy<\/a>.<\/p>\n
The institutional purpose of the Library is to protect, enhance and increase this heritage.<\/p>\n
