The Broom, or the Desert Flower

One of Leopardi’s most famous poems recited in our hall nearly 200 years after it was written

To mark the 190th anniversary of the composition of *La Ginestra*, on Tuesday, May 19, at 11 a.m., the Salone Vanvitelliano at the Biblioteca Angelica will host an exegesis and an in-depth reading of this famous “Vesuvian” poem. Speakers will include poet Andrea Mariotti, a member of the “Laboratorio Leopardi” (Sapienza University of Rome), and Annamaria Vanalesti, professor, essayist, and passionate scholar of Giacomo Leopardi.

Included in the famous collection *Canti*, *La Ginestra* was composed by the great poet from Recanati at Villa Ferrigni, near Torre del Greco, in the spring of 1836, a year before his death. Nearly two hundred years later, it reveals the full force of its startling relevance in the face of the current global turmoil: a supreme Leopardi-esque appeal for human solidarity.
